Ho Chi Minh City is set to introduce 500 electric bicycles into its public transport system ahead of the Lunar New Year to enhance last-mile travel options. Operated by Tri Nam Digital Transport Services, these e-bikes will join the existing public bicycle network and are scheduled to be in service before Tet in mid-February, according to CEO Do Ba Quan.

This initiative builds upon the city's public bicycle system, which began in late 2021 and currently includes over 500 bikes at 52 stations. Initially central to trial areas, the system's usage has waned, prompting the city to integrate e-bikes for improved efficiency in longer journeys. This expansion is part of broader efforts to encourage green transportation in Ho Chi Minh City.

E-bikes will cost VND20,000 (US$0.76) for 30 minutes, VND35,000 for an hour, and VND65,000 for two hours. Users can unlock them via QR codes through the TNGO or Zalo apps, similar to existing bicycle services. Each bike features pedals and an electric motor, using swappable batteries, with alerts for low battery levels allowing continued pedaling without electric support.

City officials stated that integrating e-bikes would diversify travel options, enhance connections with buses and metro lines, and align with green urban transport plans. The recent opening of a priority bicycle lane on Mai Chi Tho Boulevard marks an initial step toward a dedicated cycling network.

Tri Nam has also implemented 500 e-bikes in Hanoi, with 130 stations inside Ring Road 1, and plans for further expansion, reflecting a growing trend in Vietnamese cities to adopt sustainable transport solutions, reported VN Express.

  • Ho Chi Minh City to add 500 e-bikes to its public transport by February.
