A foreign man flew a drone near a herd of elephants in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand, sparking backlash and safety concerns. The incident occurred on January 21 at Tung Kwang Mineral Lick, known for attracting wildlife due to its mineral-rich soil. Videos of the event went viral, showing an elephant distressed by the drone and running into the forest.

The drone operator was identified as a foreigner in a white T-shirt, who parked by the roadside. Witnesses reported the drone's close proximity caused stress among the elephants, posing risks to both animals and tourists. Alarmed elephants could charge or run onto roads, creating potential collisions with vehicles.

The Thai public criticized the man's actions, urging officials to take legal steps. Drone use in national parks requires permission from park authorities and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand. For commercial use, additional approval from the Department of National Parks is necessary.

Officials have not released a statement regarding this incident. On the same day, another rule violation video surfaced, showing a motorcyclist riding through a herd of elephants. It's alleged the rider was a foreign national, but this remains unconfirmed, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • The drone incident sparked widespread criticism and safety concerns.

  • Thai regulations prohibit drone use in national parks without permission.

  • Another video showed similar rule violations by a motorcyclist.
