Vietnamese customs have dismantled a significant drug trafficking pipeline targeting Ho Chi Minh City, seizing over 130 kilograms of narcotics. Authorities worked with the Ministry of Public Security and Ho Chi Minh City police to intercept these drugs, mainly by tightening controls at airports, postal services, and land routes. The crackdown, which concluded last year, led to the arrest of 37 individuals and confiscation of 174 kilograms of synthetic drugs and 10 bricks of heroin.

The drug smuggling network was linked to the Golden Triangle and routed through Cambodia into Vietnam. Customs officials highlighted that arresting the ringleaders was crucial in preventing the reformation of the trafficking network. In 2025, Customs Sub-department Region II tackled 23 drug cases, 15 involving air transport, six through international mail, and two via land borders.

Seized substances included cannabis, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Investigations revealed an additional 431.6 kilograms of drug precursors. The focus on aviation routes represents traffickers’ increased attempts to exploit southern Vietnam's air and cargo channels.

The administrative merger of Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau with Ho Chi Minh City in 2025 increased the jurisdiction's importance, making it a critical area for trade and crime prevention. It now oversees nearly 99 seaports and accounts for a significant portion of the nation's import-export activities. Enhanced customs checks revealed numerous smuggling and trade fraud cases in 2025, contributing to a US$220.1 billion turnover and budget revenue surpassing targets.

Looking ahead to 2026, authorities plan to expand digital surveillance and maintain strict controls on trafficking and smuggling, reflecting the ongoing pressure on Vietnam's transport hubs, reported VN Express.
