The Vietnamese government has approved a program to advance Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) into a leading Asian institution by 2045. Signed by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, the decision aims to enhance VNU-HCM as a center for high-quality human resources, scientific development, and innovation, significantly impacting national growth, especially in the southeast region.

The initiative focuses on transforming VNU-HCM into a multidisciplinary institution ranked among Asia’s best by 2030, further positioning it as a national hub for education, research, and innovation. The university plans to invest in areas such as basic sciences, engineering, digital technologies, economics, and social sciences. By 2030, VNU-HCM aims to be among the top 100 universities in Asia, with ambitions for global rankings in disciplines like mathematics and artificial intelligence.

Specific targets include having 75% of lecturers with doctoral degrees, enrolling 1,500 scientists, 100 visiting professors, and 100 innovation experts. A transition to deliver 60% of science and technology programs in English is planned, and at least 30% of students are expected to be postgraduates, emphasizing international collaboration and academic excellence.

The program comprises six key strategies. It begins with policy improvements to attract global experts and refine academic standards by 2026. Building lecturer and manager capacity through international training and stronger enterprise ties forms the second focus. The third strategy is enhancing the quality of education to international standards, emphasizing mathematics, AI, and postgraduate support.

Advancing technological innovation and digital transformation, increasing international publications, and establishing the VNU-HCM Innovation Center are pivotal. Developing a modern university city and promoting global partnerships with top institutions are additional priorities.

Looking forward, VNU-HCM aims to strengthen its global position, with targets of having four disciplines in the world's top 50 by 2045. The program outlines a comprehensive roadmap for achieving these goals, emphasizing international cooperation and strategic alliances, reported VN Express.
