An 89-year-old woman has been killed in her home in Udon Thani after being stabbed in the neck, with her 44-year-old grandson arrested at the scene. Police said the suspect was found inside the house with a weapon, prompting an immediate response that ended without resistance. The killing has shocked the local community, with relatives and neighbours describing long-standing concerns about the man’s behaviour.

The incident occurred at around 06:50 on 24 January 2026 at a two-storey wooden house in Nong Hai subdistrict, Muang district, Udon Thani. Police identified the suspect as Mr Kiertsak, who was reportedly in a state of distress when officers arrived. He was taken into custody by Huai Luang police and transferred to the station for questioning and legal proceedings.

Inside the house, officers found the body of Mrs Tan, aged 89, with two stab wounds to the neck and a blanket covering her. A small fruit knife was recovered nearby and retained as evidence. Doctors estimated she had been dead for at least five to six hours, with the attack believed to have occurred between midnight and 02:00.

According to police and medical staff, the cause of death was sharp-force injuries to the neck. The body was sent to Udon Thani Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination. Officers also confirmed that a full psychiatric assessment of the suspect would be arranged as part of the investigation.

The victim’s daughter, Mrs Phismai, 65, said she discovered her mother’s body, when she arrived to bring food as usual. She said she was so shocked that she ran to alert neighbours for help, adding that she never expected such violence to occur in the family home. Her account was consistent with the estimated time of death provided by authorities.

The suspect’s elder sister, Mrs Oi, 50, told police her brother had previously been a normal person before developing problems after using methamphetamine while studying at vocational level and later working. She said he had been treated for psychiatric illness and required regular medication, but she believed he had stopped taking it, causing his condition to worsen. Relatives had previously warned the grandmother about potential danger, but she insisted on staying to care for her grandson.

Khoasod reported that neighbours reported that the suspect frequently shouted and behaved erratically at night, causing fear in the community. Police said he would face criminal proceedings, while mental health professionals would assess his condition to determine the next steps in the case.
