A 48-year-old man has been detained for stealing a female white swan, valued at VND60 million (US$2,360), from the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Ho Chi Minh City. The theft was identified during a routine aviary inspection at 6:00 a.m. on Monday. The suspect allegedly sold the swan to a man in the Mekong Delta, leading to both individuals being taken into custody.

The swan went missing from its enclosure shared with flamingos, confirmed by the zoo’s director-general, Vu Thi Huong Giang, on Tuesday. Security footage showed the suspect cutting through the fence with pliers on Sunday evening when the zoo was less crowded. Authorities tracked and arrested him in Tay Ninh Province, neighboring Ho Chi Minh City.

The white swan was found to have been sold to Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta, although the exact amount made from the sale is undisclosed. The police operation concluded with the detention of both the thief and the buyer.

Cygnus olor, known for its striking plumage and significant size, is part of the Anatidae family. Weighing up to 15 kg and with a wingspan of 1.7 meters, these swans are a prominent attraction at the Saigon Zoo. The zoo, over 160 years old and located in District 1, is one of the world’s oldest, preserving 138 animal species and numerous rare plants.

As investigations continue, the focus is on retrieving the swan and understanding the broader implications of the theft. The incident has raised concerns about security measures in place at the zoo, urging potential reviews to avoid future incidents, reported VN Express.
