Bus stations in Hà Nội are preparing for a significant increase in passenger numbers during the upcoming Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday. Phạm Mạnh Hùng, director of the Hà Nội Bus Station Company, stated that passenger traffic could increase by 300-400% compared to usual days. This surge is attributed to the holiday period lasting nine days, during which many people travel home or go on excursions.

Currently, transport vehicles at terminals operate at 30-50% of their capacity, which is expected to meet passenger demand. However, congestion may occur on busy routes like Quảng Ninh and Thanh Hóa, though additional reserve vehicles are in place. An estimated 2,450 reserve buses will be available, including 1,110 at Giáp Bát Station, 320 at Gia Lâm Station, and 1,000 at Mỹ Đình Station.

Peak days at Giáp Bát Station may see around 16,000 passengers, while Mỹ Đình can expect about 17,000. Gia Lâm Station, with peak volumes of 4,000 passengers, caters mainly to Hải Phòng and Quảng Ninh routes. The company has developed contingency plans, signed vehicle rental contracts, and is ready to handle passenger congestion.

To further manage the situation, the Hà Nội Department of Construction has been asked to issue 700 additional permits for vehicles. Inspections will be increased to prevent illegal activities and ensure safety, while coordinating with authorities to manage traffic flow and prevent illegal passenger pickups. Hùng emphasized the enforcement of regulations against overloading and unauthorized fare hikes, reported Vietnam News.

Key Takeaways

  • Passenger volume at Hà Nội bus stations is expected to surge by up to 400% during Tết.

  • An additional 2,450 buses will be deployed across key stations to meet demand.

  • Increased inspections and coordination efforts are planned to ensure smooth operations.
