A 66-year-old man has been arrested after beating a close friend to death with a tractor wheel joint following a drinking dispute in Khun Han district, Si Sa Ket province. The killing has shocked the local community, with relatives of the victim demanding the harshest possible punishment and refusing any forgiveness.

Police said the suspect, identified as Nam, attacked Maew, 51, a traditional ice-cream vendor, at Ban Bak Dong, about 100 metres from the victim’s home. Maew died at the scene from head injuries after being repeatedly struck with a metal tractor part, according to investigators. The incident occurred after the men had been drinking together, as they often did.

According to accounts given to reporters, the men were part of a regular drinking group in the village. On the day of the incident, Maew allegedly provoked Nam by asking, “Between a bottle of liquor and a head, which one is harder?” A friend present, Boonruang, 50, said he and Nam then rode off to buy more alcohol and continued drinking at his house until he fell asleep.

Boonruang said he later learned that Nam had returned alone and assaulted Maew. When informed, he rushed to the scene and checked Maew’s pulse, confirming that his friend had already died. He expressed deep regret, saying the violence might have been prevented had he not fallen asleep.

At the victim’s home in Ban Lak Hin Kao, relatives and villagers were preparing funeral arrangements. Maew’s daughter, Patthaporn, 22, said her father lived with his elderly father after divorcing her mother and was hardworking, though he talked excessively when drunk. She alleged that Nam was known for violent behaviour when intoxicated and urged police to pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law.

Maew’s sister, Somban, spoke angrily, saying she would never forgive the suspect. She claimed that after the killing, Nam sat with his legs crossed and mocked the body, saying, “If he wasn’t dead, I would make sure he died.” She described him as a danger to society and called for life imprisonment or execution.

Naewna reported that police at Khun Han station said Nam is being held in custody while officers wait for him to sober up before conducting a detailed interrogation. Investigators are preparing an initial charge of causing bodily harm resulting in death and said additional charges may follow depending on further evidence.
