Pattaya City has implemented a new rule assigning specific umbrella colors to different beach locations to boost orderliness and attract more visitors. The initiative, announced by Mayor Porramate Ngampichate on January 29 via Facebook, aims to create visual harmony along the coastline. Beach chair operators will receive a total of 5,880 umbrellas, starting with the northern beaches.

The new system designates white-and-blue umbrellas for northern Pattaya, white-and-green for central Pattaya, and white-and-purple for southern Pattaya. Photos displayed on the mayor’s Facebook page revealed the newly installed white-and-blue umbrellas at the northern beaches, showcasing a concentric circle pattern. However, there was no mention if the other colors would share the same design.

The announcement elicited a variety of online reactions. Some praised the move for its aesthetic appeal, comparing the decorated beaches to those in Europe. Conversely, some preferred more open beach areas where individuals can freely use their own chairs or mats. Suggestions emerged advocating a "no beach chair operators" day to provide more public access.

Locals reminded critics that Pattaya already observes two no-chair days monthly, a practice maintained for years. Beach chair operators argue this organized system helps keep the beaches cleaner with staff assisting in maintenance. In addition to the umbrella color change, the public raised further concerns regarding high food prices, unclean pavements, and a lack of public toilets near beach areas.

Looking forward, the impact of this standardization remains to be seen. It will be essential to observe whether the initiative successfully enhances the tourist experience and addresses other community concerns. The administration may need to consider additional measures for issues like sanitation and pricing to improve visitor satisfaction comprehensively, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Pattaya's new color-coded umbrella scheme aims for visual harmony.

  • Reactions are mixed, with some advocating for more public beach space.

  • Additional concerns include high food prices and lack of facilities.

Lack of trees supplying much needed shade, any area with the few remaining tree is infested with beach chair vendors...woe betide anyone setting up their own chairs or mats in those areas.

Why are the beaches allowed to be infested with the beach chairs? Doesn't the law state that there should be no commercial operations directly on the beach? The density is far too high. 9 rows X40 wide drops 360 people piled on on top of the other with little space to move. I can understand offering the option, but they operate like a pig factory farm. Reduce the density.

What if someone wants to sit in the sun? It's near impossible in the umbrella ghetto.
