Vietnam has announced a promising offshore oil discovery at the Hai Su Vang field, located about 65 kilometers off its southern coast. This significant find, part of Block 15-2/17 in the Cuu Long Basin, could bolster Vietnam's domestic energy supply and further its offshore exploration efforts. The Ministry of Industry and Trade revealed these developments during a press briefing on January 29, highlighting the field's potential for future expansion.

The discovery, operated by Murphy Oil Corporation of the U.S., presents approximately 370 feet (113 meters) of oil-bearing formations, producing about 6,000 barrels daily. The subsequent appraisal at the HSV-2X well reported a thicker oil column of 429 feet (131 meters) within the deeper reservoir. Murphy Oil plans to continue assessment and compile a detailed report on the field's resources for review by Vietnamese authorities.

Drilling began at the Hai Su Vang field in 2024, with a successful appraisal completed by October 2025. Murphy Oil operates under a production sharing contract with PVEP of Vietnam, holding 35%, and SK Earthon of South Korea, owning 25%. Murphy Oil, with a 40% stake, serves as the operator, also engaging in other projects in Vietnam's Cuu Long and Phu Khanh basins.

Vietnam is recognized as a leading oil reserve holder in Southeast Asia, with resources primarily in the Cuu Long, Nam Con Son, and Song Hong basins. Major fields like Ca Voi Xanh, Su Tu Den, and others are under active development. The recent discovery at Hai Su Vang reinforces Vietnam's significant position in the regional and global energy landscape.

Moving forward, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, along with Petrovietnam (PVN) and other agencies, will continue to review and objectively assess the field's results. This discovery is expected to contribute to Vietnam's annual oil and gas production, which in the previous year was around 10 million tons of oil and 6 billion cubic meters of gas, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam's Hai Su Vang field discovery could enhance its energy supply.

  • Murphy Oil, the operator, reports significant oil-bearing formations.

  • Authorities to assess and evaluate the discovery for future development.
