Two male students were injured after being assaulted by a former boxer in a public park in Nang Rong district, Buriram province, on 30 January 2026, prompting police intervention and renewed concerns about repeat violent offending. The suspect, who was recently released from prison, was subdued after a prolonged struggle involving police and rescue workers. Both students managed to escape and report the incident, avoiding more serious harm.

Police at Nang Rong Police Station said the incident occurred at Nong Ta Moo public park in Tambon Nang Rong, Amphoe Nang Rong. The victims were reported as two male students, one aged 16 and the other aged 18. Both sustained injuries after being attacked without provocation. Officers coordinated with Siam Ruam Jai Poo-In rescue workers to respond to the scene.

The suspect was identified as Mr Phongkorn, also known as “Ikkyu”, aged 40, a resident of Nang Rong district. When authorities arrived, he was found behaving aggressively in the middle of the park’s activity area. More than 10 police officers and rescue workers, equipped with restraint poles, took approximately 20 minutes to bring him under control due to his large build and prior experience as a boxer.

According to the 18-year-old student, he and his friend had ridden a motorcycle to the park to enjoy the view by the pond. Mr Phongkorn allegedly rode up on a motorcycle, stopped and said, “Let me see your phone.” Before the student could respond, the suspect kicked him in the mouth while he was seated and attacked his friend. The students then fled on their motorcycle and reported the attack to police.

Police confirmed that Mr Phongkorn has a violent criminal history. On 21 October 2021, he assaulted an Indian national at Nong Ree pond in the same district, resulting in the victim’s death. He was subsequently sentenced by the court to approximately four years in prison and had been released only about a month before the latest incident.

Khoasod reported that local residents have previously reported feeling fearful due to the suspect’s repeated acts of violence. Authorities noted that he exhibits behaviour similar to that of a person with mental illness and has been involved in multiple prior assaults. Police are now proceeding with legal action following his detention.
