A gunman robbed a well-known gold shop inside a Bangkok shopping mall late on Friday night, escaping with gold jewellery and cash worth about 11 million baht. The robbery occurred as staff were closing the store, causing immediate disruption and prompting a rapid police response. No injuries were reported, but the incident has heightened security concerns at busy retail centres.

The incident was reported at about 11.30pm on 30 January 2026 at a gold shop inside Lotus’s Sukhumvit 50 in Phra Khanong subdistrict, Khlong Toei district. Officers from the 191 emergency unit and Phra Khanong police rushed to the scene following the activation of the shop’s emergency alarm. CCTV footage later showed the suspect inside the store shortly before the escape.

Police said the suspect was a lone man wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and a cap. He was armed with a gun and poured fuel inside the shop while threatening employees. Staff told officers the suspect demanded gold and valuables before fleeing the scene.

Investigators stated the suspect escaped with gold jewellery weighing 149 baht and cash. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at about 11.17 million baht in gold and around 170,000 baht in cash. The suspect fled before police arrived.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from inside the mall and along nearby routes to identify the suspect and track his movements. Police have not disclosed whether the gun used was real or a replica and no arrests have been announced. The manhunt is continuing as investigators work to gather further evidence.

The robbery has drawn attention to security measures at shopping malls, particularly during late-night closing hours. Police are expected to increase patrols and advise retailers to review safety procedures. Officials have urged the public to report any information that could assist the investigation.

Khoasod reported that police will continue analysing surveillance footage and following leads from witnesses. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses. Authorities said they will provide additional information once the suspect is identified or apprehended.

Normally these gold shops are right near the entrance, and this one doesn't even have security grills, they are asking to be robbed .

Must be one of the worst places to work.

These people working in these shops probably dont make much money and there is a high risk of armed robbery.

It is the nonchalance that is the undoing of the shop staff.

Let's be honest, with such a large amount of gold, you wouldn't leave the shutter half open while cleaning up.

That's asking to be robbed, no sympathy for them.

Once again, the “mai pen rai” attitude.

Almost all of these gold shop robbers are eventually caught, some were even police officers and teachers, nobody ever appears to get away with it.

The good news is that if it was 11m baht yesterday, it’s only 10m baht today 😁

The annoying thing is that it doesn't just apply to him, but to me as well.
