Polish historian missing in Phnom Penh

Authorities in Cambodia are appealing for public help after a Polish historian vanished in Phnom Penh more than a week ago, sparking concern across three continents.

Adam Janusz Mielcarek, 59, was last heard from on 21 January after travelling from Siem Reap to the capital. His mobile phone was traced to central districts of Phnom Penh in the days that followed, with a final log-in recorded on Street 111 on 25 January. Since then, his phone has been deactivated and no further contact has been made.

His disappearance has alarmed relatives, diplomats and international police agencies. Mielcarek’s sister, Kamila Rind, confirmed that the Metropolitan Police in London has opened a missing person investigation, while Interpol has also been notified. “We are deeply concerned about his disappearance as he might need medical attention. We hope that he will be found alive,” she said.

The family has reached out to the Polish Embassy in Bangkok and the Honorary Consulate of Poland in Phnom Penh, which have circulated alerts among the Polish community in Cambodia. Notices have also been shared across social media groups in Vietnam and Thailand, countries Mielcarek had previously visited.

Rind voiced frustration at what she described as limited progress in the search, noting that her brother suffers from a mental health condition and may be especially vulnerable. “It is possible he lost his documents and therefore cannot be identified by Cambodian authorities,” she added.

Street 111, where his phone was last active, is a busy district known for its mix of residential and nightlife venues. The sudden loss of contact has heightened fears that Mielcarek may have been the victim of crime or an accident.

Cambodian authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward. The family has also asked that potential sightings be reported to local police, the Polish Consulate in Phnom Penh, or the ITAKA Foundation, a Polish organisation specialising in missing persons.

For now, relatives and friends remain in anxious limbo, hoping that renewed attention will bring answers to a mystery that has left them searching across borders.
