What to do about squirrels?

Featured Replies

When I moved here, there wasn't a single one. Now I can see a half dozen or so at any one time. They eat everything from the mulberries to the coconuts. They are great at just taking one bite out of everything and then going on to another. I have tried trapping them. You catch one, and then none of the others will go near the trap. I have found that hanging a bag with mothballs near the coconuts and jackfruit seems to keep them away, but I would really like to lower their numbers. Any ideas? A better trap? I would rather not kill them unless I have to.

I take it you use the cage traps they do work, depends on the bait, my wife says corn/maize works, keep changing the bait, they will eat most things.

Try moving the traps around that might work.

Yes, I am using cage traps. I wish my grandfather were still alive; he could make traps to catch anything. I will give the corn a try. Need to find something they like more than all the other things getting ripe at the moment.

A year or so ago a couple of times as I glanced out the window from my upstairs library I watched a squirrel racing along the top of our high dividing fence. It was snow white from its head to the end of its beautiful tail. Magnificent! Unfortunately only seen twice and for a few seconds. The second time it leaped off the fence into a high tree next door.

I mentioned this to my b/f. He said: Oh yes. Would you like me to kill it? We could eat it.

(Sigh) The function of all living things is to serve as meat. This applies notably to dogs run over on the road. Quick, into the boot, off to the farm for a feast ...

There are a lot of cats around here. They can't even get close. These things rarely go to ground; they jump from tree to tree and run along power lines.

Seen my first white one about a week ago. I have never eaten squirrel. They are mostly fruit and nut eaters. I guess that they would taste similar to rabbit.

They taste okay, a tad tough. Best made into a stew. Seeing any animals in Thailand besides dogs, cats and lizards is a cause for celebration, as most anything that can be caught will be eaten. This is why the deer species only exists in protected parks. I like seeing squirrels, although it's rare here.

Squirrels or tree shrews?

Mostly I see Tree Shrews.

You may be right, but their noses don't seem as long as the photos I have seen of them. The locals call them กระรอก and Tree shrews กระรอกต้นไม้ or กระรอกแต, but they may just be lumping them all together.
