An accidental explosion during the assembly of an improvised explosive device at a house in Yala province late on February 2 has been linked to insurgent activity, according to security authorities. The blast occurred at about 7.50 pm at a house in Moo 1, Ban Yala, Yala subdistrict, Mueang district, causing severe casualties among those involved and triggering a large-scale security response.

The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 Forward Command said the device detonated while being assembled inside the house. One badly injured suspect was taken to Central Hospital for urgent treatment, while later statements from military officials said one person was killed and several others were seriously injured during the incident. Security forces immediately sealed off the area to prevent further danger to the public.

Investigators found parts of the explosive device and related equipment at the scene, some of which were identified as being linked to an insurgent group operating in the southern border provinces. Forensic officers are continuing examinations to determine the precise cause of the blast and to confirm the identities of those involved. Police, military personnel and other agencies jointly conducted a meticulous search of the property.

According to Colonel Ekwarit Chobchuphon, Deputy Spokesman for ISOC Region 4 Forward Command, officials also discovered electronic components, fragments consistent with an improvised explosive device and an identification card left at the scene. Authorities believe the house was being used as a meeting point for assembling or handing over a bomb when a mistake caused it to detonate.

Drops of blood were found leading from the house towards Ban Pajo, Village No. 3, suggesting that other members of the group fled the scene despite being injured. Officials estimate that around three to four additional suspects may have escaped into nearby rubber plantations, prompting security forces to launch cordon-and-search operations in surrounding areas.

ISOC Region 4 Forward Command and security agencies stressed that the investigation will be thorough, transparent and fair, with coordination across all sectors to maintain peace and ensure the safety of life and property. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and to report suspicious individuals, particularly those with unusual injuries or those stockpiling medical supplies.

Daily News reported that authorities reminded the public that anyone providing shelter or assistance to suspects could face prosecution under Section 189 of the Criminal Code, which carries penalties of imprisonment and fines. Members of the public were advised to contact local officials, area task forces or the ISOC Region 4 Forward Command hotline on 1341 with any information.
