Vietnamese police have uncovered a major cybercrime operation involving over 8.4 billion email accounts traded online. Authorities in Tuyen Quang Province announced on February 3rd that they are investigating three men from Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, and Gia Lai, suspected of illegally accessing and selling leaked email data. This operation revealed the vulnerability of electronic communications worldwide.

The suspects reportedly collaborated using Telegram to acquire databases containing compromised email login credentials from previous hacks. They utilized automated software to infiltrate accounts, extracting personal information which was then sold for illegal profit. This activity took place predominantly between 2024 and 2025, enabling the suspects to accumulate substantial sums in Vietnamese dong.

Law enforcement is continuing to investigate, with potential additional suspects being part of the inquiry. In response to the breach, authorities have urged the public to protect sensitive information and exercise caution in sharing personal details online. Users were advised against installing apps from unverified sources and to ensure software is downloaded from official platforms only.

Looking forward, authorities will heighten cybersecurity measures and public awareness to prevent similar incidents. The investigation's outcomes might lead to enhanced international cooperation to fight cybercrime and stricter regulations regarding data protection, reported VN Express.
