Thick smog and fog led to unprecedented expressway closures and dangerously low air quality in northern Vietnam on Wednesday. Traffic police halted part of the expressway system connecting Hanoi with Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces due to reduced visibility caused by dense fog from 5:00 a.m. The closures marked the first such action by Vietnamese authorities due to adverse weather, as confirmed by the Ministry of Public Security's Traffic Police Department. Drivers were advised to seek alternative routes and follow safety measures like using fog lights.

Accompanying the fog, Hanoi's air quality worsened dramatically due to a stagnant cold air mass trapping pollutants. By 8:00 a.m., Hanoi University of Science and Technology's monitoring station measured an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 232, labeled "very unhealthy." This posed significant health risks as the AQI has been rising since Monday and remained above 200 since Tuesday midnight, indicating severe pollution. Other areas reported high AQI levels too, with readings such as Thai Nguyen (192) and Hai Duong (182).

IQAir ranked Hanoi as one of the world's most polluted cities on Wednesday morning. The AQI of 203 placed it behind Delhi, Lahore, and Dhaka. Inner-city districts like Tay Ho recorded alarming pollution levels. Environmental experts attribute the pollution to PM2.5 particles accumulating due to poor atmospheric conditions. forecasts suggest that air quality will persist at "poor" to "very unhealthy" levels before a possible slight improvement on Thursday, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Major expressways in northern Vietnam were closed due to dense fog.

  • Hanoi's air quality reached "very unhealthy" levels, with AQI exceeding 230.

  • Pollution spikes are attributed to trapped PM2.5 particles under stagnant conditions.
