RoPhim, the largest platform in Vietnam for distributing pirated movies and shows, announced its termination of services on Thursday. The administrators cited a commitment to not impede legitimate platforms as the reason for the shutdown. The announcement, made via RoPhim's website and Facebook page, urged users to transition to licensed services such as FPT Play and TV360.

RoPhim, which had amassed 216,000 followers on Facebook, gained significant popularity last year. This surge was fueled by an increase in content offerings and interface improvements, despite the service lacking necessary copyright licenses for its content. The platform provided free access to films and shows, with an optional paid subscription to remove advertisements.

The Piracy site had its own mobile app and was frequently praised for its user interface and streaming quality. However, it faced repeated domain blocks, prompting it to change domain names multiple times, most recently on February 2. In its farewell message, RoPhim's administrators acknowledged the negative impact of pirated websites on legal services and expressed the need to take responsibility.

The cessation of RoPhim comes amid broader actions against piracy in Vietnam, as several websites distributing pirated live sports broadcasts halted updates recently. Analysts indicate that piracy continues to present challenges within Vietnam's digital content industry. These platforms attract large traffic volumes but negatively affect companies investing in legal content and discourage users from purchasing licensed services.

Pirated websites often sustain themselves through advertising revenue linked to gambling and the distribution of harmful software. Moving forward, industry observers are watching to see if the closure of RoPhim will influence consumer habits and promote a shift towards legal content consumption, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • RoPhim, a major site for pirated content in Vietnam, has closed to support legitimate platforms.

  • Analysts emphasize the ongoing issue of content piracy impacting legitimate businesses in Vietnam.

  • The closure could signal a potential shift towards increased legal content consumption.
