A Hanoi court has sentenced two ringleaders for smuggling 546 kilograms of gold from China into Vietnam. Tran Thi Hoan and Pham Tuan Hai received ten-year prison terms and were ordered to repay VND1.2 trillion (US$46.18 million). The verdict was part of a trial involving 11 defendants, concluding on Wednesday night.

The operation involved Tran Thi Hoan, owner of a gold shop in Lao Cai Province, and Pham Tuan Hai, director of Thang Long Trading and Services Co. They trafficked gold from China, exploiting the price difference between domestic and global markets in 2024. Six other defendants, including Hoan’s employees and hired couriers, received prison terms ranging from three to five years, while three executives from Vietnam Gold Company received suspended sentences for accounting violations.

Hoan and Hai are required to repay the full value of the smuggled gold, with Hoan ordered to pay VND708 billion and Hai VND499 billion. The court has seized various assets, including real estate and gold bars, to ensure compliance. Noting the defendants' actions endangered society by disrupting public order and causing state budget losses, the court imposed strict penalties.

The smuggling was facilitated by a Chinese woman, "Ba Beo," who provided gold below market prices. Communication and transactions were arranged through WeChat, with couriers instructed to hide gold in their shoes. After receiving the gold, Hoan's staff altered the bars to remove foreign markings, then sold them domestically at a profit.

Despite the coordination among accomplices, the court found the operation was spontaneous rather than systematic, and only Hoan and Hai were held financially accountable. Their trafficking exploits capitalized on Vietnam's strong demand for gold due to a market gap.

Looking Forward, the court's judgment serves as a warning against such trafficking activities. Authorities will likely increase border security to prevent future incidents. As the gold market remains volatile, legal actions are critical in maintaining economic integrity, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Two ringleaders were sentenced to ten years for gold smuggling.
