Learning to drive

Featured Replies

I want my wife to learn to drive. We're looking at using a Driving School (Ban Chang, Rayong) for the lessons, but I would also like to let her drive my car with me as passenger. Is there such a thing as a Provisional Licence and 'L' plates, like we have in the UK?

Yep, she goes to the driving license center, takes the test and on failure gets a 90 day pass to drive on the roads. She can take the test as many times as she likes, and have as many 90 day passes on failure free of charge. No conditions/restrictions at all on her driving the car on her own. They did offer her a D/L for 4,000bht if she felt the test was too hard for her (after her second fail).

My misses is currently doing this, can't pass the written test, hasn't progressed to the actual driving test yet. But out every day in our EV (she's done 6,000km in the last 6 months).

Amazing Thailand!

Thanks. That's great information. Is the "writing test" actually writing, or is it a multiple-choice test?

Multiple choice.

In all fairness to your wife, there are 2-3 questions on the test that are rather bizarre to deal with. ‘It’s illegal to park an Abrams tank on the side of a hill at a blind curve because…. A,B,C,D. ‘
