Durian Prices Surge as Supply Decrease Before Lunar New Year

Durian prices in Vietnam have surged as supply diminishes ahead of the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays. Traders in the Mekong Delta report buying the highest quality Monthong durian for VND140,000 ($5.4) per kilogram, marking the highest rate in two years. The premium grade A Ri6 durian is currently priced at VND80,000, which is a 30-50% rise since November.

This price increase follows a reduction in durian supply due to lower off-season harvests in the Mekong Delta, which spans from November to March. Last year's weather conditions, including flooding, impacted many orchards, reducing yields significantly. Many farmers, like Nguyen Thanh from Dong Thap Province, face difficulty in procuring enough durians despite offering higher prices.

Traders and farmers report challenges resulting from erratic weather and rising production costs. An example is Cuong, a farmer in Can Tho City, who decided against harvesting this year after prices fell during Tet last year. He plans to focus on the main harvest season in April instead, highlighting a cautionary approach amid current market volatility.

Dien, another farmer from Dong Thap, experienced a 30% drop in harvest but managed to sell around 200 kilograms at VND130,000 per kilogram. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association attributes the supply shortage to the catastrophic floods that recently affected the delta, impacting recovery efforts significantly. Additionally, high export demand has further strained local supply.

Looking ahead, the supply constraints and high demand are likely to maintain elevated durian prices. Farmers and traders are now focusing on the primary harvest season starting in April, which may help stabilize the market. Export growth continues strongly, with durian exports valued at $3.86 billion last year, reflecting a 20% increase from 2024 figures, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Durian prices have climbed sharply due to limited supply before Tet.

  • Farmers face challenges from poor weather and increased costs.

  • High export demand continues to affect local supply and prices.
