Early on February 11, thousands of people leaving Ho Chi Minh City for the Lunar New Year holidays encountered severe traffic congestion. Expressways leading to central Vietnam were heavily clogged, with gridlock extending nearly 10 kilometers. The worst bottlenecks were observed at the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh and Phan Thiet - Dau Giay junctions.

The congestion began before dawn, primarily affecting the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway between An Phu interchange and Long Thanh. Near the Phan Thiet - Dau Giay Expressway connection, vehicles moved slowly due to high traffic volumes. Motorists experienced significant delays, with many vehicles progressing meter by meter.

A minor collision at 9 a.m. between a container truck and a passenger car at the Phan Thiet interchange compounded the situation, blocking one lane and exacerbating delays. Traffic police intervened to manage the scene, preventing further backups. Meanwhile, on the Cam Lam - Vinh Hao Expressway, a sleeper bus accident intensified congestion near the Nui Vung Tunnel, adding to the chaos as it blocked part of the route toward Nha Trang.

In response to the expressway jams, frustrated drivers diverted to National Highway 1. Nguyen Minh, amid delays, opted to switch his route from Dong Nai to Thanh Hoa to avoid extensive wait times. Authorities noted that high vehicle volumes increased the risk of accidents, highlighting the importance of maintaining safe following distances.

The surge in traffic is attributed to the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations, which begin on February 17. Vietnam observes a nine-day holiday from February 14 to 22, leading to increased travel as people journey back to their hometowns, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City expressways faced severe gridlock due to holiday travel.

  • Minor accidents worsened delays, with police managing traffic flow.

  • Many drivers chose alternative routes to bypass blocked expressways.
