Vietnam's health ministry is stepping up inspections of street food vendors as demand rises before the Lunar New Year. Vendors who do not adhere to safety guidelines could face fines of up to VND3 million (US$115) and have their products destroyed. The move aims to ensure consumer safety amid increased dining activity.

The Food Safety Authority issued a directive on February 9, highlighting risky practices such as poorly displayed food, lack of protective coverings, and improper food handling. These lesser violations carry fines from VND500,000 to 1 million. More severe breaches, like using unsafe equipment or contaminated water, may result in fines up to VND3 million.

For the first time, the Ministry of Health has emphasized stricter enforcement against unsafe street food practices, reflecting concerns after recent food poisoning outbreaks. Street vendors are not required to have a food safety certificate but must meet hygiene and food handling standards. Violations are common, especially among small roadside stalls that often lack necessary resources.

Authorities are particularly concerned about practices such as the use of illicit food additives and improper storing of prepared foods. Vendors are required to provide complete information on ingredient sources if food safety incidents occur. These measures are backed by several government decrees.

Provinces and cities are urged to enhance monitoring post-inspection and coordinate checks during the upcoming festival season. The aim is to publicly disclose violations to protect consumers and uphold public health standards, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Stricter food safety inspections aim to safeguard rising Lunar New Year demand.

  • Vendors face fines and potential product destruction for safety breaches.

  • Authorities will enhance checks during Tet to ensure compliance and safety.
