Hà Nội's job market is bustling ahead of Tết, with a high demand for temporary workers in retail, food, and service sectors. Despite elevated wages, businesses are struggling to fill positions, especially with students returning home. The period before Tết is a key time for part-time employment, drawing many young workers eager to earn extra income during their university break.

Many students, like Phùng Thị Hiền from the Hanoi University of Business and Technology, take on seasonal roles to alleviate financial burdens. Hiền works as a bakery assistant, earning VNĐ25,000 to VNĐ30,000 per hour, with higher pay as Tết nears. Similarly, Bùi Bảo Thanh, a second-year student with retail experience, secured a food stall position, making VNĐ500,000 per day.

The strong demand for part-time workers leads to attractive pay, often 20–50% higher than usual, with some roles paying up to three times more during key Tết days. However, many employers report difficulties in hiring, as highlighted by Chu Quang Linh from Pepper Lunch Vietnam. Linh mentions the challenge of recruiting students who often leave for their hometowns.

Retail chains like Circle K also face staffing shortages despite offering competitive wages that reach VNĐ100,000–130,000 per hour during Tết. A survey by the Hà Nội Employment Service Centre shows an overall demand of about 40,000 positions, with retail and service sectors making up 57.4% of this. Unskilled and technical roles account for 44% of openings.

Looking ahead, Vũ Quang Thành, deputy director of the Hà Nội Employment Service Centre, advises young workers to remain vigilant and discerning in their job search. While seasonal work remains lucrative, it demands responsibility, adaptability, and sometimes challenging schedules. Employers seek workers who can start immediately and work effectively, highlighting the importance of careful screening, reported Vietnam News.

Key Takeaways

  • Demand for Tết workers in Hà Nội surges, but vacancies remain.

  • Students benefit from high seasonal wages, balancing work and safety.

  • Employers struggle to meet targets as students leave for holidays.
