Ho Chi Minh City has greenlit a nearly VND7 trillion ($270 million) project to expand Vinh Loc Road, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion at one of the city's busiest western gateways. The widening will stretch from Tran Van Giau Road to Road No. 2A in the Vinh Loc Industrial Park. This move is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, especially in areas plagued by bottlenecks.

Originally approved between 2015 and 2016, the project faced delays due to escalating costs, design challenges, and funding issues. Initially budgeted at VND807 billion, the plan was to create an 18-meter-wide road, scheduled for completion by 2020. The new proposal significantly broadens the road to 30 meters, accommodating four lanes over a distance increased from 6 to over 7 kilometers.

The expansion will pass through Binh Loi, Vinh Loc, Tan Vinh Loc Communes, and Binh Tan Ward, necessitating the acquisition of nearly 24 hectares of land. State-managed properties make up 8 hectares, while the remaining areas require compensation, affecting 1,424 cases and displacing 93 households. The project's larger budget is attributed to the road's increased width, updated compensation rates, and integrated site clearance.

Currently, Vinh Loc Road suffers from heavy congestion due to its narrow width of 7-8 meters, particularly at intersections like Vinh Loc five-way and Vinh Loc-Tran Van Giau. This has led to traffic being rerouted into one-way systems, impacting both residents and businesses. The expansion to 30 meters is deemed essential by city authorities to restore two-way traffic, enhance safety, and reduce pressure on surrounding routes.

Once finalized, Vinh Loc Road will serve as a crucial link between key industrial zones and major highways like National Highway 1. The upgrade is anticipated to support economic growth by lowering logistics costs and sharing traffic more effectively. Implementation of the project is slated for 2026 to 2028, following the completion of necessary adjustments and site preparation, reported VN Express.
