Ambulances in Ho Chi Minh City faced severe challenges navigating traffic congestion, particularly as the Lunar New Year approached. On February 7, a 40-year-old patient with acute respiratory failure experienced a critical drop in oxygen saturation while stuck at Dien Bien Phu Roundabout. The journey, usually a five to ten-minute trip, extended over 30 minutes due to the traffic, forcing medical staff to switch the patient's respiratory support from a nasal cannula to an oxygen mask.

In the days leading up to Tet, which heightens vehicular congestion, ambulance driver Le Hoang Son explained the difficulty of maneuvering through the city's traffic hotspots, including Hang Xanh Intersection. Despite public awareness encouraging yielding to ambulances, physical limitations often prevent vehicles from making space. This was especially evident when the three-kilometer trip to the hospital took significantly longer under these conditions.

Ho Chi Minh City, with a burgeoning vehicle population of 12.7 million, sees intensified traffic around Tet due to increased delivery vehicles and travel. Major roads like National Highway 1 and Dien Bien Phu Street remain heavily congested. Dr. Vu Khoa Cat recounted a previous incident when an ambulance had to use the sidewalk to reach a hospital during festive crowds, ultimately enabling a stroke patient's recovery.

To mitigate these delays, the HCMC 115 Emergency Center has implemented strategies like deploying motorbikes for swift access in narrow areas and establishing satellite stations. These measures aim to maintain effective emergency responses despite the city's infrastructure challenges. As Phuc's team rested briefly before resuming duty, their readiness to respond underlined the persistent pressure faced during holiday periods, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Heavy traffic in HCMC poses critical challenges for ambulances, especially during Tet.

  • Emergency teams employ methods like motorbike response units to navigate congested roads.

  • Infrastructure limitations exacerbate delays despite public awareness of emergency protocols.
