Vietnamese authorities can impose temporary travel bans on individuals with certain unresolved tax issues, often catching travelers off guard at the airport. This regulation affects people intending to travel abroad for tourism, business, or education, as many are unaware of such restrictions until they attempt to leave the country.

The Vietnamese Law on Exit and Entry allows authorities to bar citizens and certain foreign nationals from leaving if they owe significant taxes. This measure aims to prevent those with unpaid obligations from evading their responsibilities. It applies to business individuals, household business owners, and legal representatives facing tax enforcement actions. Even Vietnamese citizens planning to reside abroad and overseas Vietnamese can face restrictions if their tax debts remain unsettled.

For business individuals, an unpaid tax debt of VND50 million (about US$1,923) overdue for 120 days can trigger an exit ban. Legal representatives of enterprises must have debts of VND500 million (approximately $19,227) or more, also overdue 120 days, to face restrictions. Those whose businesses are no longer operating may be restricted 30 days post notification from tax authorities if they haven’t cleared their dues.

Vietnam's tax authority offers an online tool for individuals to check if they are subject to exit bans. By using their tax identification number, users can determine if they are restricted from travel due to tax debts. The only way to lift a restriction is by fully paying the outstanding amount.

As international travel resumes, attention to tax status is crucial for travelers to avoid last-minute surprises at immigration. Unresolved tax issues from past business dealings can disrupt travel plans, making it vital for individuals to verify their tax status well before their departure date.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnamese travelers may face exit bans due to unpaid taxes.

  • Debt thresholds vary: VND50 million for individuals, VND500 million for legal representatives.

  • Checking tax status online can prevent travel disruptions.
