Vietnamese migrant workers in Japan and South Korea are shifting from temporary stays to making long-term investments by purchasing homes. This trend indicates a desire for stability and a permanent presence, facilitating better opportunities for their families.

Nguyen Van Sac, originally from Hanoi, bought a house in Osaka after working in Japan since 2009. Initially, he planned to work, save money, and return to Vietnam. However, after his visa was upgraded and his family joined him, the need for stable housing led him to purchase a property amid the COVID-19-induced economic downturn. The home cost 16 million yen, discounted as a cash payment; he financed it through savings and family borrowing.

Similarly, Ngo Van Hien and his wife acquired an apartment in Gimpo City, South Korea, after a decade there. Hien, who started with an E9 visa and was later upgraded to an E7 skilled worker visa, found homeownership preferable to traditional rental deposits, which his wife saw as inefficient. The couple successfully navigated local real estate and financial hurdles to make their purchase.

Experts like Nguyen Nhu Tuan from Vietnam's Department of Overseas Labor Management note that such investments are becoming common, especially among skilled workers. They reflect both policy adaptations in host countries and workers’ ambitions for long-term residency. However, Phan Viet Anh cautions that visa security remains crucial, as property ownership doesn't guarantee residency rights.

Looking forward, this trend is expected to continue, driven by opportunities in host countries and expanded visa programs like Japan's Specified Skilled Worker. Yet, it's crucial to balance this with potential domestic labor shortages in Vietnam, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnamese workers abroad focus on stability by purchasing homes.

  • Successful property investments depend on secure residency visas.

  • Trends may affect Vietnam's labor pool as skilled workers stay abroad.
