Japanese retailer Takashimaya is set to open a new shopping mall in Hanoi's Starlake urban area in the latter half of next year. The mall, located on plot C1-CC1, will span over 17,240 square meters and include 10 above-ground floors and three basement levels. This development comes in an area known for having the highest land prices in Hanoi, with prime land reaching over VND114 million (US$4,392) per square meter.

Previously, Takashimaya had expressed its intention to establish a presence in Hanoi by 2026, but the opening has now been slated for the third quarter of 2027. The retailer plans to invest around 2 billion yen (US$13 million) into the project, as disclosed by Chairman Yoshio Murata to Nikkei. Takashimaya already operates in Vietnam, with a high-end department store in Ho Chi Minh City since 2016 and a shopping complex, The Loop, in Hanoi.

Experts view this expansion as a significant move in tapping into Hanoi’s thriving retail market. The Starlake area, with its considerable investments in infrastructure, is expected to attract a large number of local and international visitors. Analysts suggest that the new mall points to continued confidence in the region's economic growth and retail potential.

Looking forward, this development is likely to increase competition among retailers in Hanoi, potentially driving further investments into the city's upscale shopping sectors. Additionally, the influx of international brands associated with a prominent retailer like Takashimaya could elevate Hanoi's status as a shopping destination. It remains to be seen how this addition will impact local businesses and consumer choices, reported VN Express.
