Vietnam has granted SpaceX's Starlink the license to launch satellite internet services, facilitating up to 600,000 connections in its initial phase. The Ministry of Science and Technology approved Starlink Services Vietnam for telecommunications licenses for both fixed and mobile satellite networks. This move supports the country's goal to expand digital connectivity.

The licensing follows a pilot phase authorized in April 2025 by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc. SpaceX is the first foreign company to pilot satellite internet services in Vietnam. The initial rollout will comprise four gateway stations and user terminals, with infrastructure posing no interference to existing systems.

Satellite internet suits areas lacking reliable ground-based networks. Vietnamese officials highlight its role in bridging connectivity gaps in remote mountainous and island regions. The network also serves as an important backup during natural disasters.

A December 2025 briefing by the Telecommunications Authority emphasized satellite internet's resilience during storms and floods. It was noted as a vital reserve channel, underscoring its significance in emergency scenarios.

Starlink's deployment aligns with SpaceX's global broadband strategy, using a network of low-Earth orbit satellites. By the end of 2025, SpaceX had launched over 10,000 satellites, serving around 5 million users globally in 125 countries and territories.

Doan Quang Hoan of the Radio-Electronics Association suggests that while satellite internet can quickly close coverage gaps, its effect on Vietnam’s domestic telecom market may be minimal. Coverage gaps are mostly in off-grid areas, limiting broader market impact, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam licenses SpaceX’s Starlink for 600,000 initial internet connections.

  • Starlink satellite internet serves remote regions and acts as a disaster backup.

  • Satellite internet's domestic market impact expected to be limited by small coverage gaps.
