Trump warns Starmer and demands “DO NOT GIVE AWAY Diego Garcia

US President Donald Trump has launched a blistering public attack on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, urging him to scrap the controversial deal handing sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump warned Starmer he was making “a big mistake” and demanded: “DO NOT GIVE AWAY DIEGO GARCIA!” He argued that long-term leases were no substitute for sovereign control, claiming the UK risked “losing control” of the strategically vital island.

Under the £3.4 billion agreement signed in May, Britain would transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while retaining joint UK-US control of the Diego Garcia military base under a 99-year lease. The base, located in the Indian Ocean, is considered a critical asset for Western military operations.

Trump suggested Diego Garcia could prove essential if the United States needed to launch military action against Iran, referencing its potential use alongside RAF Fairford. He warned that instability in Tehran could pose a threat not only to the US but also to Britain and its allies.

Despite his sharp criticism, Trump stressed that the US-UK alliance remained “strong and powerful.” However, he cautioned that relinquishing sovereignty would be “a blight on our Great Ally” and urged Britain to remain “strong.”

The intervention has intensified political pressure on Starmer at home. The Conservatives have branded the agreement a “catastrophic surrender,” with Leader Kemi Badenoch calling it “an act of great stupidity.” Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel described the deal as an “utter humiliation” and urged the Prime Minister to reverse course.

Critics argue the deal risks weakening Britain’s strategic position and handing leverage to a country seen as close to China. Supporters, however, insist it secures the long-term future of the military base while resolving longstanding legal disputes over sovereignty.

The UK’s Foreign Office said the agreement is “crucial to the security of the UK and our key allies” and maintains that it guarantees continued joint control of Diego Garcia.

Trump’s public rebuke marks a significant escalation in the transatlantic debate over the Chagos settlement — and raises fresh questions about whether the deal can proceed smoothly without full political backing in Washington.

Key Takeaways

  1. Trump Publicly Rebukes Starmer
US President Donald Trump warned Keir Starmer he is making “a big mistake” over the Chagos deal, urging him not to “give away Diego Garcia” and questioning the wisdom of relying on a long-term lease instead of sovereignty.

  2. Diego Garcia At Heart Of Security Row
The Diego Garcia base — central to UK-US military operations — is seen as strategically vital, particularly amid tensions with Iran. Trump suggested it could be critical for future US military action, intensifying the geopolitical stakes.

  3. Political Pressure Mounting At Home
Conservatives including Kemi Badenoch and Priti Patel have seized on Trump’s comments, branding the £3.4bn agreement a “surrender” and demanding Starmer scrap the deal — turning it into a flashpoint over sovereignty, security and Britain’s global standing.

The moron doesn't seem to remembercthat he approved the deal last year! 😀

Weird that he thinks Greenland is worth taking but not Diego Garcia.

Writing in capitals all the time won't change anything.

The idiot has changed his mind four times. Talk about Taco!"

In February 2025, Trump said he was "inclined to go along" and felt it would "work out very well".

But in Jan 2026 after taking office, Trump branded the deal an "act of total weakness" and "great stupidity".

However, following a phone call with Starmer on Feb 5th, Trump reversed his stance again, describing the talks as "very productive" and stated he understood the deal was "the best [Starmer] could make.''

But then, Feb 18th, Trump told Starmer "DO NOT GIVE AWAY DIEGO GARCIA!".

The man is a laughing stock, an utter buffoon.

I'm just waiting for his next ranting post, warning Clement Atlee not to give away India.

CIA probably told him to object because MH370 is still hidden there 🙃

Russia or China will be in there quickly if they do ,starmer a numpty

Storm in a teacup. Who holds title matters little. The Brits and yanks have a 99 year lease there for their bases.
