Hoa Binh Islet in Hanoi's Thong Nhat Park has become a viral hit, known as "cat islet" for its 30 resident cats. Located in the middle of Bay Mau Lake, the islet attracted attention after social media posts highlighted the stray cat population. Visitors flock to catch a glimpse of the cats, now a popular attraction.

Historically, park staff introduced cats to the islet 20 years ago to control rats, which has since grown into a sizeable feline community. Although largely unnoticed by most park-goers, its newfound fame required organized boat trips led by park employee Chu Ngoc Phong. The island also houses a temple, visited regularly by locals on lunar holidays.

Overcrowding and leftover food have emerged as issues due to increased visits, with efforts to maintain hygiene becoming paramount. Phong limits visits to 10 people at a time to reduce disruptions to the cats. Despite challenges, some visitors like Tuong Trang find solace in the islet's peaceful ambience, often bringing food and photographing the cats.

Looking forward, Thong Nhat Park, spanning over 50 hectares, continues to see an influx of visitors following the removal of fencing in December 2025. This change has heightened interest, especially on weekends, but also calls for improved facilities to handle the increased footfall and preserve the islet's tranquil environment.

Key Takeaways

  • "Cat islet" in Thong Nhat Park attracts visitors due to its cats.

  • Increased popularity raises concerns over pollution and crowding.

  • Access improvements boost visitor numbers to Hanoi’s largest park.
