Myanmar Junta Chief Piles Up Vanity Titles

Myanmar’s military ruler Min Aung Hlaing has added yet another honour to his growing collection, receiving an honorary doctorate in Public Administration from Yangon University earlier this month.

The award, presented by Education Minister Chaw Chaw Sein, was justified as recognition of his “successful” handling of the country’s transitional period and recent election. Critics, however, dismissed the gesture as absurd, pointing out that the poll was staged in phases across limited territory and recorded the lowest turnout since 2010.

Min Aung Hlaing has long been accused of using titles to bolster his legitimacy. Since the 2021 coup, he has conferred prestigious national honours on himself, including the Thadoe Thiri Thudhamma and Thadoe Maha Thray Sithu. He has also extended awards to his wife, loyalists and even deceased artists, bypassing constitutional rules that reserve such powers for the president.

Internationally, he has been decorated by Russia, Thailand and Malaysia, though rights groups urged Malaysia to revoke its honours following the Rohingya genocide. Russia’s military institutions granted him professorships and doctorates after the coup, citing his role in strengthening ties with Moscow.

At home, nationalist organisations such as the Young Men’s Buddhist Association have also showered him with accolades. In total, Min Aung Hlaing has amassed at least 12 titles since seizing power, making him Myanmar’s most decorated dictator in modern history.

Behind the medals and ceremonies lies a country in crisis. Five years of military rule have brought economic collapse, soaring prices and widespread displacement. More than 3.6 million people are now internally displaced, while basic commodities and the currency have spiralled out of reach for many.

For critics, the junta chief’s obsession with honours is a stark contrast to the reality faced by ordinary citizens. As Daw Hnin Hnin Mway of the Democratic Party for a New Society put it: “People in Myanmar and around the world know Min Aung Hlaing as the man who led the country to ruin—economically, socially, politically, and in every other way.”

The spectacle of self-bestowed titles may serve the general’s vanity, but it underscores the widening gulf between the junta’s narrative and the lived experience of Myanmar’s people.
