Inguinal Hernia

Featured Replies

I have been diagnosed with the above and need an op. Could experts direct me towards a decent hospital in the Pattaya area with some approximation of price.

As I am going to UK in early April will this affect my flight plans?

I am 83 if this makes a difference.

It will only affect your flight plans if the hospital appointment is in early April.

I had the same thing last year at 73. Just before I was going back for my daughters wedding and a trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I had it done at VImut Hospital in Bangkok. Great doctor and easy surgery. They offer two ways, general surgery for about 65,000 baht or laparoscopic at just under double that. I had the laparoscopic. Checked in about 4pm to the hospital, went up to the room and got prepared. Down to surgery about 6pm with surgery at 630pm. By 8pm I was back recovering in the room with no pain. Given good meds and slept well. The doctor came to check at 8am, and I could be released anytime after that.

This was my first surgery and it was very well done. Check the hospital and the doctor and feel good about it. I got it done quickly as I did not like this thing sticking out of my body mentally. But had the surgery done and was at the wedding 3 weeks later feeling nothing and then a week after that was doing 12 kilometer day hikes in the Grand Canyon. Good luck.. Sorry that I dont have a recommendation on a Pattaya hospital, but VImut was great, room like a 5 star hotel and I kid you not. My insurance was good but not great. I still have my policy from over 20 years ago so they paid the price for the general surgery in full and I paid the difference to get in and out easier and with much less pain..

Linguinal Hernia

Wow, my friend has a inguinal hernia, his quote was 200k baht at BPH.

Yours sounds more serious

I’m 74. I had that surgery at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya a year and a half ago. It about 150,000 baht for an open surgery which I took. It’ll be around 3 to 350,000 baht for a keyhole surgery. I stayed for two days because I was old. No heavy lifting for the first month and eat easy to digest foods. I ate soft foods and drank beer at night. I did everything by myself but I recommend you have a friend there in your room to help you. Buy a pee container for sleep time.

Any hospital can do this but not all can go it laparoscopically which, especially given your age, would be better if possible.

Least expensive options would be government hospitals such as Queen Sirikit Naval Hospital in Sattahip or the Red Cross hospital in Sri Racha. However I am not completely sure these can do laparoscopic surgery and finding out would require a visit (arrive very early morning) and there may be a wait list.

The Burapha University Hospital in Ban Saeng is also a possibility and might be more likely to offer laparaoscopic surgery.

Using a government facility will involve long waits, arriving early morning, several appointments to do what could be done in one at a private hospitl, and possibly a wait list for the surgery itself, but costs will be about 1/3 - 1/4 that of private hospitals.

Otherwise, among private options, I would suggest either

Pattaya Memorial Hospital https://www.pattayamemorial.com/

Phyathai Sri Racha https://www.phyathai-sriracha.com/?lang=en

In both cases, make an advance appointment with a general surgeon. In the case of Phyathai there is a Westerner in their marketing office you can contact who can help select a doctor and make appointment etc - email or call Gavin Waddell <[email protected]> tel Tel: 0 3831 7333

At these private hospitals, I would estimate laparoscopic repair would be around 200 - 250k. Much less than BPH but still much more than public hospital.

In terms of your travel plans, assuming no complications, the usual guidance is to wait 2-4 weeks before lengthy air travel.

Thanks Sheryl. Sorry about my 'spelling error'! (Linguini is my favourite pasta!) I already wrote to Gavin with no response. Will start checking the above mentioned hospitals. My ailment was diagnosed by Dr. Jessada at Pattaya International & I've asked for a quote. Will contact other hospitals using the above doctor's notes.

Had mine done at Maharaj Government Hospital in Chiang Mai. Surgery done by a professor at CM University. One day of "long waits" (about 4 hours total) to get the hernia checked and arrange for surgery. The wait for surgery was about 3 weeks. 18,000 THB for the surgery and two nights in a private room (outstanding service). The only oddity was my wife had to run across the street to a pharmacy to buy the "mesh" used in the surgery. Go figure.

I highly recommend the government hospital route. Why spend more money than you need to?

I like Dr Jessada, also at Queen Sirikit if you want it cheaper. Gavin is on WhatsApp, if you add his number he'll respond very quickly

At that price, will have been open approach not laparoscopic. About 10-15k more for laparoscopic in govt hospitals where it is available.

Queen Sirikit naval hospital near Pattaya

Is this a higher level or better than the Bang LaMung hospital in Pattaya generally?

December last year had open surgery for an incarerated hernia at Phayathai Sriracha.

Surgery and 5 days stay - Bt. 90,000.

Much better. Chonburi Hospital is good also

If your insurance doesn't pay for the laparascopic procedure, find a government hospital that does it. It will save you a ton of money, you'll spend less time in hospital and have a faster recovery. I'm 73 and had it done in June last year at Thabo Crownprince hospital near Nong Khai. Cost 51,000 THB which my insurance (WRLife) paid for, 2 nights in hospital and excellent results. Highly recommended.

Yep - that was open surgery. I was sore for a couple of weeks. Paracetamol is your friend. wink Given that was 16 years ago, perhaps Maharaj offers laparoscopic surgery now? They are affiliate with CMU.

They probably do.Will always cost more than open. About 15-20k more at a government hospital, 50K+ more at a private one.
