Vietnam's Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai airports set all-time passenger records on February 22, marking a significant milestone as the 2026 Tet holiday concluded. Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat alone handled 177,859 travelers, surpassing its forecasted peak by over 12,000 passengers. The day saw a total of over 300,000 passengers using both airports, with operations proceeding smoothly.

This surge followed the nine-day Tet break, the Lunar New Year celebration in Vietnam. Notably, February 22 was the sixth day of the Lunar New Year and the final holiday day, with many travelers returning to urban areas. The bulk of this increase stemmed from arrivals, as approximately 104,700 passengers flew back to Ho Chi Minh City from northern and central provinces.

The newest Terminal 3 at Tan Son Nhat, operational since 2025, managed 454 domestic flights and processed around 68,000 passengers, maintaining stable operations. Similarly, Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport recorded 124,546 passengers, its highest ever in a single day, facilitated by recent expansions and advanced technology implementations.

Experts view this record-breaking day as a demonstration of Vietnam's growing travel demand and effective airport management. The expansions and technology like automated kiosks and smart baggage systems were critical in managing the immense flow, especially at Hanoi's international terminal. The smooth operation was further aided by digital ID verification via VNeID.

Looking ahead, continued infrastructure enhancements are anticipated to accommodate growing passenger numbers. The performance of both airports during such high-demand periods could influence future projects and improvements across Vietnam's aviation network. Maintaining efficiency and handling an increasing volume of travelers will remain priorities for airport authorities, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai airports broke passenger records post-Tet.

  • Advanced tech and terminal expansions aided smooth operations.
