Vietnam is accelerating preparations for the European Commission’s (EC) fifth inspection, aiming to remove the “yellow card” warning on its seafood exports. Deputy Prime Minister Trần Hồng Hà signed an official dispatch urging urgent measures among ministries and coastal provinces to address illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This inspection, set for early March, will determine if the warning is lifted or escalated to a “red card.”

For nearly eight years, Vietnam has faced challenges in meeting EC standards, with four prior inspections failing to resolve the IUU fishing concerns. The fifth inspection is critical, as the outcome will influence Vietnam’s seafood export status in the EU market. Key areas of focus include legal framework improvements, fleet management, and enhancing seafood traceability.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for top priority on IUU fishing issues, urging officials to oversee 123 specific tasks. The Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, and Foreign Affairs are collaborating to prepare comprehensive documents for the EC's visit. This includes peak inspections and rigorous documentation to align with Decision No. 515/QĐ-BNNMT.

The Ministry of Public Security is tasked with expediting investigations into IUU fishing cases and integrating monitoring systems with the national database. The Ministry of National Defence will enforce stringent control over vessel activities and intensify patrols in contested maritime zones. Additionally, the Ministry of Science and Technology is working on synchronizing fisheries databases to ensure data accuracy.

Moving forward, provincial authorities are expected to prepare detailed reports, showcasing their commitment and addressing any potential shortcomings. They bear full responsibility for any lapses that might hinder Vietnam’s efforts to remove the EC's warning, reported Vietnam News.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam is undertaking urgent measures to address EC’s concerns over IUU fishing.
