Certificate of Residence

Featured Replies

My son-in-law is hoping to visit in late 2026 when he hopes to buy a big bike. (He is an experienced rider all over Europe.) He has selected the make & model at Mityom Pattaya. They have said he can put a deposit down; make the purchase (when he arrives, paying cash/outright) and he will have to wait to get rid of the red plates before he goes touring in Thailand.

He will be staying with me (to avoid the British Winter.) I rent my present house does this make a problem when applying for a Cert of Res? (I have been in the same house for the last seven years.)

Is there anything else he needs to be made aware of in complying with Thai law?

I think CoR also depends on what visa he's coming on here, that makes a difference..., if you mention that, can get better responses...?

He usually enters on a 90 day tourist visa. Thanks for your response.

There is no 90 day tourist visa, As he is British I suspect that he arrives on a visa exempt which is good for 60 days. (which can be extended by 30 days)

So far i know you can't register a bike in your name when you don't have a proper long term visa.

A friend of mine couldn't register his new car in his name as he has a DTV visa which is regarded a tourist visa.

So i would check this out before buying a bike.

Thank you. Will heed your advice.

a certificate of residence can be obtained regardless of the visa type or extension of stay, so yes he register the bike on his name.

The other option would be to register the bike on your name right now, so the with plate would be there earlier to avoid issues,

Yes he can get the Proof of Residence but the DLT (at Phuket at least) will not register a car or bike in your name if you don't have a long term visa.

this is from personal and other experiences.
