FBI Fires Agents Tied to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Classified Files Case

At Least 10 Staffers Dismissed Over Special Counsel Probe

At least 10 FBI employees who worked on former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents were fired Wednesday, according to multiple sources.

All of those terminated were involved in the probe examining Trump’s retention of classified records at Mar-a-Lago after leaving the White House in 2021.

Subpoena Controversy Sparks Fallout

The dismissals followed a report that the FBI had subpoenaed phone records belonging to current FBI Director Kash Patel and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles while they were private citizens.

Patel claimed the subpoenas were issued under “flimsy pretexts” and hidden in restricted case files to avoid oversight, though no independent verification of those allegations has been provided. He did not publicly cite specific misconduct by the agents who were fired.

A source confirmed Wiles’ phone records were reviewed as part of the classified documents investigation, but it remains unclear whether Patel’s records were formally subpoenaed in that case.

Two Federal Cases, Historic Indictments

Smith oversaw two federal investigations into Trump — one focused on alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and the other on classified documents and potential obstruction.

The classified documents case was dismissed in 2024 by a federal judge in Florida, who ruled Smith had been unlawfully appointed. Smith later dropped the election interference charges after Trump won the 2024 presidential race.

The investigations marked the first time a former U.S. president faced federal criminal indictment.

Agents’ Association Condemns Firings

The FBI Agents Association criticized the terminations, arguing they violate due process protections for career bureau employees.

In a statement, the group warned that removing experienced personnel weakens the agency, undermines morale and could damage recruitment efforts.

Broader Crackdown on Trump Investigators

The firings come amid broader moves by the Trump administration targeting officials involved in the two federal probes. The Justice Department has already dismissed prosecutors who worked on Smith’s team, and other FBI agents tied to the election-related investigation — known internally as “Arctic Frost” — have also been removed.

The controversy intensified last year when the GOP-led Senate Judiciary Committee disclosed that the FBI had obtained phone metadata from several Republican lawmakers as part of the Jan. 6 investigation.

Trump has repeatedly called for Smith, former Attorney General Merrick Garland and former FBI Director Christopher Wray to face prosecution over what he describes as misconduct. Attorneys for Smith have maintained his actions were lawful and consistent with Justice Department policy.

Google ai overview:

"Yes, Senator Chuck Grassley has stated that documents related to the FBI's "Arctic Frost" investigation were hidden in so-called "Prohibited Access Files" at the FBI. He alleges this was done to prevent them from public disclosure and congressional oversight.

"Arctic Frost was the vehicle by which partisan FBI agents and DOJ prosecutors could improperly investigate the entire Republican political apparatus".
