Vietnam’s international Internet capacity fell by approximately 3,700 Gbps due to a rupture in the AAE1 submarine cable in Thailand. The incident, which occurred during mid-February over the Lunar New Year holidays, has not yet been repaired. Despite the drop, domestic services were only partly affected, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Authority of Telecommunications.

The telecommunications regulator confirmed that the reduction amounts to nearly 10% of Vietnam’s total international Internet bandwidth. However, the impact on domestic Internet and communications services was minimal. Regulators emphasized that there is no significant imbalance between the supply and demand for bandwidth in the country, thanks to existing reserve capacity and contingency measures.

Telecom operators in Vietnam acted swiftly by implementing rerouting strategies to other submarine cables and alternative routes. This response ensured continuity in services without localized outages. The coordination between domestic carriers and their international partners played a crucial role in mitigating the potential fallout from the cable rupture.

Vietnam’s international connectivity has strengthened over the years with six submarine cable systems, including AAG, IA, AAE1, APG, ADC, and SJC2. Despite enhancements, Vietnam's systems have faced frequent issues, recording nearly 40 incidents since 2022. At times, multiple cables have experienced disruptions simultaneously.

The AAE1 cable, operational since July 2017, is a key component linking Vietnam with Europe and the Middle East, while also providing backup connections to Hong Kong and Singapore. The current fault underscores the reliance on these undersea links and highlights the need for robust backup strategies, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam's international Internet capacity saw a 10% reduction due to the AAE1 cable rupture.

  • Domestic services remained largely unaffected due to rerouting and contingency plans.

  • The incident highlights the critical role of submarine cables in Vietnam’s Internet connectivity.
