U.S. Designates Iran a ‘State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention’

Rubio Cites Decades of Hostage-Taking

The United States has formally designated Iran as a “state sponsor of wrongful detention,” accusing Tehran of using foreign nationals — including Americans — as political leverage.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the move Friday, saying Iran has a long history of detaining innocent people for diplomatic advantage. He pointed to the 1979 hostage crisis following the Iranian Revolution as an early example of the practice.

“This abhorrent practice must end,” Rubio said, demanding the release of any Americans currently held.

Travel Restrictions Could Follow

Rubio warned that if Iran continues detaining Americans, the U.S. could impose additional measures, including restricting the use of U.S. passports for travel to, through or from Iran.

Such geographic travel bans are already in place for North Korea, where Americans must obtain special validation passports to enter.

The new designation itself does not trigger automatic penalties but signals heightened diplomatic pressure.

Americans Still Held in Iran

According to Hostage Aid Worldwide, at least four Americans remain in Iranian custody as of August 2025.

In 2023, former President Joe Biden secured the release of five detained Americans in exchange for $6 billion in previously frozen Iranian funds.

Tensions Escalate Amid Protest Crackdown

The announcement comes as relations between Washington and Tehran deteriorate further. President Donald Trump has voiced support for recent anti-government protests in Iran and warned of possible military action if demonstrators are executed.

On Friday, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said at least eight people — including two children — have been sentenced to death in connection with the protests, with dozens more at risk.

Nuclear Talks Stall as Strike Threat Looms

Meanwhile, negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program have stalled. A third round of talks in Geneva failed to produce a breakthrough, and Trump has publicly set a 10-day window for progress.

“We haven’t made a final decision [on strikes],” Trump told reporters. “They cannot have nuclear weapons.”

With diplomacy faltering and rhetoric intensifying, the new detention designation adds another layer of strain to an already volatile U.S.-Iran standoff.
