Israelis love war, redux

Featured Replies

[Opinion. Israelis are so used to war, they celebrate it, perhaps as an inevitability.

74% supported Israel’s brutal decimation of Gaza and displacement in the West Bank. As of Day Two, 59% percent support the attacks on Iran.

Even while hiding in underground bomb shelters, Israelis were jubilant about their first strike on Iran, supported by the US, without any provocation.

Sorry, I think there’s something wrong with this picture. If the Israeli government is a warmonger, Israelis themselves are overwhelmingly war-happy.

It doesn’t seem to matter that Israelis are killed in the streets, that Israeli soldiers target and murder children, doctors and journalists and are rarely killed in turn. The real danger is being hit by a rock.

Israeli soldiers stand by while settler land thieves beat and sometimes kill the families who were there first. The settlers burn their crops and cut down ancient olive trees.

And now, like the United States, Israelis are calling for a forever war, supporting murdering foreign leaders of sovereign nations and killing their families.

Do you know how hard it is for a girl to go to school in the Middle East. This war bombed a girls’ school—108 schoolgirls dead. That’s not collateral damaged. That’s a war crime.

It’s hard to believe that such a vengeful, warlike society exists in the world today. The world is so small, accessible to everyone. Human beings are of one race.

Arms are for hugging. Have Israelis forgotten that and only hug their own kind?]

‘This is round two’: attacks on Iran have broad support among unsurprised Israelis

Air strikes halt bitter political feuding ahead of elections as prominent Israelis call for a broad open-ended war

[Another forever war. And what was ‘Round One’?]

Emma Graham-Harrison and Quique Kierszenbaum in Tel Aviv and Jason Burke in Jerusalem

The Guardian: 28 February 2026

Air raid sirens emptied Israel’s streets on Saturday and filled its bomb shelters, as the country braced for waves of Iranian attacks.

But individual fear and resignation did not temper broad political and popular support for the country’s second regional war in less than a year.

“We all of us feel that what we started needs to be finished,” said Gal Tzairi, a 23-year-old university student sheltering in an underground car park in central Tel Aviv. “We want our safety, so we know we need [this].”

[Finish what, exactly? Wipe out every Muslim everywhere? When will Israelis learn to feel safe?]

Disputes over conscription of ultra-Orthodox men and whether to hold a state inquiry into the 7 October 2023 attacks were set aside, as opposition leaders across most of the political spectrum united behind Netanyahu.

Yair Lapid, the official leader of the opposition, said in a social media post: “I fully support this operation. We all agree about the justification and importance of striking the murderous Iranian regime.”

[What about the murderous Israeli regime who killed 100,000 human beings? There’s something wrong with the opposition when it doesn’t oppose the government—that’s its job. Just like Trump, Netanyahu is waging war to delay, or even escape, prosecution.]

One of the few political critics of the war was lawmaker Ayman Odeh, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, who attacked the opposition for falling in line behind a government that wants to “live by the sword forever”.

“There is no opposition in Israel, only 50 shades of militarism,” he said on social media. “Time and again, they try the same formula here: another ‘round’, another operation, more blood. Every time they promise that this time it will bring security, and every time reality proves otherwise.”

[Israelis have bomb shelters under their homes. Doesn’t that speak to their warlike mindset? Neither Gaza nor Iran were any threat to Israel. Israel just wants to be the boss, killing anyone who gets in the way.]

What planet do you live on? Iran funded terrorism against Israel. Do you remember the recent attack from Gaza into Israel?

Iran have spent the last 50 years trying to make Israel not exist , funding terror attacks on Israel and attacking Israel .

Of course Israelis are going to support an attack on Iran and a possible Iran regime change

I don't think the Israelis and Americans have thought this through properly. The stated objective is regime change, what happens if the attack brings out even more hard-liners in Iran? IMO they are only succeeding in uniting the Muslim world against them.

It would take little effort from Iran to shut down the Strait of Hormuz completely. That's 20% of the world's oil supply.

Ho hum, excuses, excuses. There are always excuses for emenies.

Your colours are showing, Nickster. Where have I heard something like, DEATH TO IRAN. Oh, yeah.

In fact, I think shutting down the Strait would be far more effective than missiles. 20% equals a jump at the pump.

If other Muslim countries have a pork with Iran (and I'm a vegetarian), let them figure it out. Stay the <deleted> at home.

I cheer the death of a leader who oppressed the people of Iran and funded terrorist. Can I send you a tissue so you can dry your tears over the death of your theological terrorist hero?

Sadly they are psychologically damaged people for understandable historcial resons - but they see Nazis and paranoia everywhere - like a dog that has beaten you can never trust it not to bite you.

Just saying, we're not talking about either of these countries obeying the rule of law. If they don't obey the rule of law in the int'l sphere, how can we expect them to at home. There are lots of examples where they don't But they aren't the only ones. Pols do what is expedient to get re-elected.

I bet you cheered when Osama was assassinated, too. Those Special Forces couldn't take an old man on dialysis and bring him to trial in the US?

That, Dude, is the rule of law, justice...and what used to be the American way. Now it's more like a lynching. Which the public has been taught to cheer, just like the Roman gladiators, they want blood. And pols give it to them (of course).

You know anybody in Iran who Khameini oppressed, tortured, imprisoned? What skin do you have in this game except enjoying the purge for your entertainment. I myself have been corresponding with a human rights lawyer in Evin for three years. I wonder what happened to him.

Ooh, terrible analogy and not one I would use. But I do take your point.

Indeed, as an OP pointed out, why is there a word for anti-Jew and not racism against any other group?

Dislike, whooo. You sound like you're in grade school. No doubt some of it's real and some imaginary. Islamophobia 1997; antisemitism 1897, presumably no specifics before that.

Paranoia breeds violence, Nick. Try love--it's so much more satisfying than hate.

The part where anything anybody has to say about Jews and/or Israel must be an antisemite. Israel is just not the centre of the known universe. It has proved itself an arrogant and belligerent warmonger. To say that does not make me an antisemite.

Nor does calling out the 59% brainwashed Israelis who cheer war on Iran or the 74% who love bombing Gaza or the 52% who feel Israelis are justified in stealing land in the West Bank, illegal under int'l law, and committing violence on the people who live there.

If you think opposing the immoral actions of the Israeli govt and the support for those actions of more than half the populations, then you have no empathy, morality or heart.

Semites are just not that important in the grand scheme of things.

59% of those who have not yet permanently left Israel. I'd imagine that those people are die-hard if they choose to stay and as such are more likely to support the Greater Israel Project.

Israel was attacked by Gaza and Iran , I expect you want Israelis to give love back to Gaza and Iran ?

Why do you focus on Israel and Jews so much ?

The term, Antisemite, is a pejorative meant to shut down any and all criticism of Israel. It used to mean "hatred of Jews" or "violence toward Jews", however, the term has now been so overused to the point that it is meaningless. But it's wielded because some backward countries have enacted laws to throw you into prison if the term, Antisemite, can be made to stick in their court system. But it's still an overused pejorative, and the countries throwing their citizens into prison for uttering speech labeled as Antisemitic have themselves become authoritarian, fascist regimes, more akin to the country where that term originated.

Israel was attacked by Gaza

Israel was attacked by the inhabitants of an open-air concentration camp (a city surrounded with a prison-like concrete and metal retaining wall topped with barred wire and covered by a panopticon of watch towers and machine-guns to keep the Palestinian prisoners in place. That concentration camp is called "Gaza."

Think about that for awhile, and ponder the terms, "Oppression," and "Apartheid." I love it when the victims are framed as "aggressors" and the oppressors frame themselves as the victims. Israel is an Apartheid state just like South Africa was, and just like South African apartheid, it is abhorrent. And I'm tired of Israel's framing themselves as the universal victims.

You say.................

Some people are saying the Iran war will drag on forever.

Not sure yet if it's fake news.

Trump's team is saying a couple weeks at most.
