Hanoi plans to transition all gasoline and diesel taxis to green-energy vehicles by 2030. This phased approach, initiated by the city People’s Committee, aims for specific targets of up to 64% conversion by 2026, 70% by 2027, and complete transition by 2030. The initiative seeks to support taxi operators with policy guidance and infrastructure adaptations.

This move stems from Hanoi's broader environmental goals, including making all public buses green by 2030. Currently, there are over 14,300 taxis in the city, with nearly 8,800 already electric and 13,600 set for replacement. The strategy aligns with the People’s Council's earlier resolution on low-emission zones, restricting gasoline-powered motorbikes during certain hours or in specific areas.

Experts believe that this transition will require significant infrastructure expansions, such as charging stations and designated taxi zones. The city intends to draft a resolution to aid this shift and suggests extending registration fee exemptions for eco-friendly vehicles, enhancing their viability. Limiting high-emission vehicles will be another focus to support these greener strategies.

Going forward, Hanoi will prioritize the stability of these electric taxi operations post-2030. Enhancements in traffic management and the establishment of designated pickup/drop-off points will be crucial. The city’s shift reflects an ongoing commitment to reducing pollution and improving urban air quality, reported VN Express.
