Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has approved plans to build metro lines linking Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh International Airport to combat traffic congestion. This decision was made during a meeting on March 3, focusing on critical national railway projects. Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province are tasked with the swift implementation under strict regulatory compliance to ensure efficiency and prevent corruption.

The proposed metro lines include the Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem and Thu Thiem-Long Thanh routes, covering over 50 km. The city intends to start construction in the first half of this year. The projects operate under a public-private partnership with Truong Hai Group, aiming for the Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem line to begin in April, with a five-year completion target. The Thu Thiem-Long Thanh line has shifted from a light rail to an urban railway, with construction possibly starting by June 30 for a 2030 completion.

Long Thanh airport, with a total investment of approximately VND337 trillion (US$12.94 billion), received its inaugural flight in December 2025 and expects to start commercial flights by mid-2026. Initially, it will focus on long-haul routes from regions like Europe and North America. The airport currently depends on road connections, primarily the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, which is prone to congestion.

Currently, several projects are underway to improve connectivity, including upgrades to Ring Road 3 and National Highway 51. However, the lack of synchronized transport infrastructure risks continued congestion once the airport becomes fully operational, reported VN Express.
