Vietnam's tourism industry faces challenges as tourists report frequent overcharging, insiders warn. Concerns have been raised that such practices could undermine Vietnam's promotional efforts, with locals and experts calling for stricter penalties and technology-based monitoring. Chi Mai, a Hanoi tour guide, notes that incidents of price gouging are common, affecting both residents and tourists.

On February 24, an American tourist was overcharged 14 times the usual fare for a short motorbike-taxi ride in Hanoi. The driver later apologized and promised not to repeat the behavior. Similar incidents have been reported across major tourist hubs like Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. In July 2025, Filipino tourists paid 50 times the normal fare for a taxi ride, and in another instance, an Australian family was charged three times the regulated rate for a cyclo trip.

Nguyen Tien Dat, CEO of AZA Travel, states that these practices are more prevalent in areas with heavy international tourism. Despite being a seasoned professional, he recounts his own experiences with overcharging. Tran Trung Hieu from the Hanoi Department of Tourism acknowledges the issue, especially in popular areas like the Old Quarter, and highlights measures like a tourist hotline and increased security to address it.

Pham Hai Quynh of the Asian Tourism Development Institute describes the issue as detrimental to Vietnam's tourism image. Some vendors prioritize immediate profits over sustainable practices, with fines being insufficient deterrents. Quynh suggests deploying digital tools for price transparency and imposing heavier fines to combat violations. Dat also points out the challenge of tracking vendors who frequently change locations.

Industry experts emphasize the need to improve price transparency and enforcement to rebuild confidence and strengthen Vietnam as a tourist destination. Suggested measures include implementing tourism apps integrated with pricing data and imposing severe penalties on repeat offenders, reported VN Express.
