Vietnam has announced a temporary suspension of sending workers to the Middle East due to increasing regional instability. This decision follows heightened security threats after recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in Iran and subsequent retaliations from Iran. The measure came into effect on March 1, affecting the deployment processes managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Currently, approximately 10,000 Vietnamese workers reside in the Middle East. This includes almost 6,000 in Saudi Arabia, 4,000 in the United Arab Emirates, 500 in Qatar, and close to 100 in Bahrain. They predominantly work in domestic service, hospitality, restaurant, and construction sectors.

As per the directive, 14 licensed companies send workers to the UAE, 12 to Saudi Arabia, six to Qatar, and two to Bahrain. With the suspension now active, these agencies are tasked with maintaining communication with employers and safeguarding the interests and safety of the deployed workers. Coordination with Vietnamese diplomatic missions and labor management at embassies is emphasized to monitor the situation.

In light of these developments, Vietnam's Department of Overseas Labor Management is working with the country's missions abroad to ensure the safety of its citizens. This involves close monitoring and implementing strategic measures suited to the evolving situation.

Vietnam's broader overseas workforce consists of over 600,000 citizens globally, contributing about US$7 billion in annual remittances. The suspension underscores the government's commitment to protecting its workers amid geopolitical tensions, report VN Express.
