Ho Chi Minh City officials have directed intensified inspections to address illegal modifications obstructing emergency exits in apartment buildings. This mandate aims to enhance the city's fire safety measures and prevent potential disasters. The municipal People's Committee's March 7 directive urges ward and commune administrations to collaborate with relevant agencies for comprehensive reviews of apartment blocks.

These inspections focus on identifying renovations or installations in corridors and shared spaces that might hinder escape routes. It was emphasized that any previously identified violations must be corrected promptly according to existing regulations. Authorities are also advised to motivate residents, building management, and property operators to voluntarily remove any structures that could impede emergency exits, thereby reducing fire hazards.

Police in Ho Chi Minh City plan to increase inspections of apartment buildings that are not compliant with fire safety standards while providing guidance and training on evacuation and fire prevention to residents. Additionally, relevant agencies will assess the ongoing maintenance and functionality of fire prevention systems in these buildings to mitigate fire risks.

In 2022, the city reported 331 fire incidents that resulted in 27 fatalities and 19 injuries, with property damages estimated at over VND49 billion (approximately US$1.87 million). The police noted that about 80% of these fires were due to electrical system failures, primarily in private homes, rental properties, and small businesses. Despite these challenges, the number of fires declined by 34% compared to the previous year, attributed to enhanced prevention efforts, inspections, and public awareness campaigns.

As Ho Chi Minh City continues to bolster its fire safety protocols, authorities will remain vigilant, focusing on preventive measures and community engagement. Ensuring the functionality of emergency exits and proper fire safety equipment will be pivotal in safeguarding residents and minimizing fire-related incidents, reported VN Express.
