In a bid to boost the Philippines as a "welcoming destination" for Muslim travelers, various government agencies, diplomatic missions, and tourism stakeholders recently gathered at the Malaysian Embassy for the Halal and Muslim-friendly Tourism Forum. Organized by the Global Tourism Business Association, the forum aims to enhance services for the halal market. Michelle Taylan, Founding Chairman of the association, emphasized the importance of educating stakeholders to better serve halal travelers.

The forum comes as Halal tourism faces challenges due to Middle East conflicts and rising travel costs. Usec. Myra Paz Valderrosa Abubakar of the Department of Tourism (DOT) acknowledged these impacts, noting the reluctance of travelers amid regional instability and increased fuel prices. Despite these hurdles, the DOT is committed to promoting Halal tourism by developing Muslim-friendly tour packages.

Efforts are underway to partner with tour operators and travel agencies to create circuits featuring destinations, dining, shopping, and accommodation options recognized as Muslim-friendly. Currently, 65 establishments have gained this status, with plans for expansion. Additionally, the Malaysian Embassy supports the initiative, particularly in highlighting untapped potential in places like Zamboanga, Cotabato, and Cagayan de Oro.

According to Ambassador Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony of Malaysia, promoting Halal tourism can enhance exposure to diverse communities and boost the industry. Malaysia leads in the number of Muslim travelers to the Philippines, followed by Indonesia, the Middle East, and Brunei Darussalam, reported SMNI.
