We have finally arrived in Thailand.

If I want to extend or change my non imm O visa to a retirement visa will the immigration dept give one year more from expiry of my present visa or one year from approval?

As a newbie I am expecting a reply saying I am using the wrong terminology :o

One year from your date of entry on your current 90 day stay. So if you entered June 20 this year your extension will end June 19, 2008.

Since the start day of your first extension is your entry date, it might be wise to go get your extension as early in your final month as you feel comfortable in doing.
