You really are a very strange person. I don't mean that in a mean or demeaning manner. It just is a fact. You really do live on a different planet in your own mind. Have you ever been in any bar. My first experience with bars was when I was a toddler - my grandfather owned and ran a bar. In fact, he ran that bar right through prohibition as well as running booze from Canada to Pennsylvania where his hotel and bar were located. He, my father, and uncle had some really great prohibition stories of that era. So I was introduced to bars and learned how to play pool when I was knee-high to a pool table and chatted up gals in the bar who were old enough to be my mom. No wonder I had a thing for older women later in life. Now Thai bars? Take my grandfather's bar out of Pennsylvania and put it in Pattaya, staff it with bargirls and - voila! You'd have a Thai bar - with a pool table of course.

Really GG - you need to get out and expand you're horizons. Have a few drinks, pay a bar-girl's bar-fine, and get laid. Live a little. It's fun!

I remember driving with my late best friend in northwestern New Jersey, in his VW Beetle, a little weed, a Late Harvest California Riesling, ice cold, listening to the Moody Blues on our way fishing. Those were the times I would go back to if I had a wish.

Never been to Texas, but growing up I had my stool in many bars.

There is a big difference between a bar in the west and a bar here.

Here you can sit at a bar stool on the street and have a meal while watching people walk by, or you can get a table with a good view of the TV and watch cricket or rugby (THE GAME). You can have a beer with it if you want, but it is not necessary. In the evening, you might be asked if you want company. UP TO YOU.

If you go to a bar at Cowboy, soi 11, nana, soi 6, or walking street, you will find a nice lady or girl to sit with you and talk to you. This may cost you a drink or 2 but you can also pay 100 baht instead of drinks.

As for needing a hotel close by, unless you are like me and live outside Bangkok and plan to stay past BTS, then yes, you might need a room, but if you live in Pattaya, then you simply get a Grab.

You have researched a lot of things why have you not researched this there is no need to buy alcoholic drinks you can buy a GRAPE KNEEHIGH AND sit with your teddy bear or clipboard.

Lots of folks say that. Some of those folks end up marrying a "cashier", too.

I avoided those sorts of places when I used to spend Golden Week (out of Tokyo) in Thailand, but my temples were 500 yard Par 5s and the like. Curiosity eventually got the best of me, and I stepped passed some neon sign and found out what all the fuss was about. "Cashiers, cashiers" as far as the eye could see. That was on Walking Street in Pattaya, or as Brits say, Puh TIE ya. Well, do you know what else I saw? Yes, there were scantily clad women who tried to make my acquaintance, but there were also mobs of Chinese tour groups, men and women, led by a guy carrying a pennant. The Chinese seemed titillated by what they saw. They probably got more value there than they did when ushered into some jewelry shop.

The most noble among foreigners who visit or reside in Thailand stick to temples and golf courses (or claim they do), but many do not. Stroll past Nana Plaza in Bangkok and you'll see a combo of fat old bald guys who believe crossing a half dozen or more time zones turned them into babe magnets, you'll see lots of 20-something guys who have never summoned up the courage to ask a woman back home for a date, or else failed to impress the women of their choice with their Call of Duty score, you'll see a majority of guys from East Asia, male victims of societies where female fetuses are viewed as abortion-able, and you'll see lots and lots of couples, entertaining themselves either out of curiosity or to spice up their relationship.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say something that might be controversial: I think the women who traditionally work the bars deserve a statue, or at least a postage stamp honoring their contribution to the economic development of Thailand. Not only did they entice tourists to visit and old guys to retire, they also likely motivated the location managers of international firms looking to set up factories. Back when Japan was going to rule and own the world, lots of investment came to Thailand, rather than go to other SEAsian lands. Yes, there were government-issued incentives, but a part of me (having lived a long time in Japan) believes the ready availability of women in bars had more than a small part to play in "business decisions". Ever seen Thaniya Street?

Before you move on, there are a few things everyone should do at least once in life, from jumping out of an airplane to visiting the Pyramids to climbing the Matterhorn (all up to you, of course) to visiting an agogo.

Before it's too late, GG, walk in behind one of those Korean couples, or follow the guy hoisting the pennant, and see what all the fuss is about.

GranularGargantuan, after decades in Thailand, you have finally reached the intellectual frontier of your expatriate existence: wondering what happens inside an ordinary indoor space fashioned with chairs, tables, and glasses filled with alcoholic beverages.

You have apparently spent all these years walking past them, being beckoned inside, and somehow never discovering what millions of other people figured out in a minute. Now you are contemplating renting a room nearby so you can sleep off the seemingly uneventful experience afterward. Difficult to imagine how anyone could prepare for such an expedition.

What is particularly revealing is the way you casually describe the women as strangers you might ordinarily hire to wash your clothes or clean your house. That type of bigotry apparently passes for normal social observation in your world. Imagine actually encountering someone like you in real life and discovering this is how you flippantly categorize people you have never even met.

And after all these decades, you still approach ordinary human experiences as though they require a formal research project before you can participate. Watch some more Stones videos, ask Gemini, survey the forum fifty more times, write twenty more disjointed paragraphs about it, and perhaps eventually you will be fully prepared to walk through a bar door.

The rest of us somehow manage to experience life and just get on with it without turning every mundane activity into a confused, bumbling, existential crisis.

Perhaps give it another decade or more of careful research before you set out on your proposed adventure. You clearly aren’t ready yet.
