Anti-Israel protests in Bangkok fuel concern over Israelis

No, it's the other way around, these Chabad houses are built by individuals, who have reached out to Chabad for support. If Chabad likes the project, they will then support it, which means they will then spread the word in Israel that people can go to that Chabad house. They don't build Chabad houses where there are jews, but rather it's the other way around, they build the Chabad house and then recruit the jews to visit there. This is what we saw in Pai. It's northern Thailand, there were no jews there. It was the Chabad house that created the influx of jews in Pai.

And there are Chabad houses all over the freakin' world, if ever there was an octopus spreading its tentacles across the globe, Chabad is it.

Racist Jew hating paranoid fear mongering conspiracy theory garbage.

Not at all, just a sober and realistic illustration of how Chabad operate.

Chabad is present in more than 100 countries and territories with over 5,000 to 6,000 global institutions and centres (including approximately 3,500 to 5,000 dedicated Chabad Houses).

Over 100 countries!

BS,

You paint them as a great global threat.

That is not true.

As said they serve about .1 percent of the world population.

They couldn't be a great global threat even if they wanted to be.

So what? This threatens anyone how?

Isreali Jews love to travel. Does that threaten you?

I've noticed that they have locations in many smaller market US non tourist appeal locations without any other Jewish religious presence at all.

In such cases I assume their main funtion is to serve the local Jews there and ,a few Israeli expats.

Again -- SO WHAT?!?

Why do you feel so threatened?

Are you similarly alarmed about Mormons who surely travel much more widely than Chabad to AGGRESSIBELY try convert people?

Again Jews try to convert nobody.

I don't know what these Chabads are all about.

Reading this line from the website here, it makes me feel sorry for these people who have to attend these places. It reminds me when I was forced to go to Catholic Church as a child. I'm glad I don't belong to any organizations anymore.

Does this line mean anything to you? "Reactive and preventative Jewish experience."

And the point of travel is to take a break from your own culture and explore another culture. Not sure why you need to or if it's a good thing to re-create your own culture in Thailand. You need to be glued to the Torah. It will kill you to take a break from the Torah for 2 weeks.

Our work has the blessed blend of providing both a physical and spiritual ‘home away from home’ for our Jewish traveling family. It incorporates aspects of reactive and preventative Jewish experience.

Children might be forced by their parents as happens with all people.

Chabad isn;t forcing anyone. That's absurd.

There are legitimate discussions as to whether they are a cult.

I just found an interesting coincidence.

Israel - 1948

Chabad houses began around 1950 I believe ... so I have a theory on what it's about, but I'm not entirely sure ... but the dates are undeniably linked.

You could say that about most religious sects.

They aren't Judaism.

They're a sect of Judaism.

Personally I'm an atheist but I'm also in favor of religious freedom.

So still a cult, spreading all over the world.

I have no opinion if they are a cult or not.

All I said is you could argue that any religious sect is a cult.

One opinion:

Chabad is not considered a cult; it is a Hasidic movement within Judaism that emphasizes education, outreach, and community service. While some may perceive certain behaviors as cult-like, Judaism encourages questioning and personal growth rather than blind adherence.

I understand. The point being that it isn't necessarily anti-Semetic or against Jews to question the presence of Chabad.

Calling BS on that unless you're questioning many other religious groups as well.

I'm not seeing any Mormons OUT! protests in Thailand even though arguably they deserve that more than Chabad.

You are contradicting yourself. You stated that it isn't Judaism, but then go on to describe what Judaism encourages. But it isn't Judaism.

No I have not.

Perhaps you don't understand Judaism.

Jews don't have a pope.

I obviously mean Chabad does not represent ALL of Judaism.

But they are definitely Jewish. A sect of Judaism.

Have Mormons been in the news lately? That's a false equivalence.

Oh mary please.

They need to be in the news to be a real thing?
What I'm obviously referring to is that Thailand welcomes them in knowing their purpose to AGGRESSIVELY convert Thais mostly Buddhists to their rather peculiar religion.

No Jew in Thailand Chabad or otherwise has ever done that.

If Chabad is a threat to Thai culture whcih I don't believe they are, why not look at other foreign groups? Why only about Jews?

The seem to worship their Rebbe, from what I have read. That fits the behaviour of a cult. Of course I don't know anything about Judaism. But if the cap fits...

You're welcome to your opinion.

I don't have a strong one either way about Chabad but as I said before most religious sects can be called cults.

If Chabad is a cult they are no threat to Thai people as again Jews do NOT CONVERT!

Chabad is being scapegoated.

As far as Mormons if you don't know already you can learn in two seconds about the nature of their international MISSIONS program.

I don't mean to bother Mormions.

I'm pointing the fact that Jews who do NOT CONVERY are being unfairly scapegoated.

AFAIK others are being looked at. Why are you so nervous about Chabad? They are a sect/cult. It's normal that they be scrutinized. If all is okay, then no problem.

Your focusing on converting people seems a distraction. The issue is bad behaviour and illegal behaviour. It's not for you and I to judge, unless we have all of the evidence in front of us.

They're not a "global" threat, that's true, it's more a case of you have to look at the particular local circumstances. They're certainly a threat in Thailand in the view of many Thai people, from Pai to Phuket. Chabad have eradicated much of traditional Thai life in Pai and substituted it with Judaist right wing orthodox crazy.

So you think it's "normal" to protest at the Israeli embassy with Jews Out signs and shut down the observance of a very important Jewish religious holiday in Phuket?

I don't. I think it's atrocious.

To add Chabad is a sect of Judaism but they do invited all Jews.

As far as being against AGGRESSIVE conversion efforts, sorry, I am against that and always have been.

I see obvious double standard in accusing only Jews of hurting Thai culture.

Well, just looking at Pai for instance, the massive influx of Israelis, as a result of the Chabad house, has had very significiant influence on local life. And yes, it does affect my own life actually, but not in a positive way. I would much rather prefer to see traditional Thai life, than Ultra-Orthodox Judaism in Pai, and I suspect most people would.

The problem is not that Chabad serves Jews, it's that they have targeted campaigns that target Jewish tourism to these Chabad houses, so they create an influx of Jews that is tremendous. Have you seen the growth rates for tourists from Israel? It's 54% year on year. It's causing problems.

It's not conversion that is the problem, but the takeover of other lands by an Ultra-orthodox right wing Jewish nationalist mystical sect.

Yes, but many host nations have strongly curtailed mosques that had political affiliations. However, nobody does that with Chabad for some reason. Even though Chabad is highly political.

Is bad and illegal behaviour normal? It's not for me to judge what the Thai nationals think of as normal in this situation. If they feel that bad and illegal behaviour has gotten out of hand and they want something done about it, who am I to disagree?
